West Virgina Trout Stocking Schedule Mar 16 2012

West Virginia

Stocked trout streams in West Virginia this past week… The South Branch of the Potomac continues to get DNR love. I’m having trouble finding recent fishing reports but it’s been stocked multiple times in the past three months and the weather has warmed up — it should be fishing very well!

The latest trout stocking info from Virginia. The Jackson, notably. I mentioned Hogue Creek in Frederick county (not too far a drive for me) quite some time ago and still have not been there. Passage Creek is another recently stocked stream in the area if you live in Northern Virginia and consider anything up to an hour and a half drive “in the area.” It was just stocked last month, too.

Updated Resources Page

I’ve updated the resources page to include the Washington DC area. Most notably, the Tidal Potomac Flyrodders, which is a large and growing group devoted to fishing the Potomac River right in DC. I am a member and you should consider joining, too, if you fish anywhere near the DC metro area, Northern Virginia and Maryland. Also, one of the TPFR members recently posted a Google map showing good fishing spots on the Potomac around Fletcher’s Cove.

Shenandoah National Park Spring 2012 Facilities Opening Schedule

See when the campgrounds, visitor centers and other facilities are opening this year at Shenandoah National Park.

Note also that there will be some prescribed burns near Big Meadows and at the park headquarters on Rt. 211. This could affect things for you if you’re fishing places such as the upper Hughes River, upper Hazel River, the South Fork of Dry Run, Pass Run, Jeremy’s Run and possibly other places, all depending on the weather conditions. No word on when these burns will occur. Check www.nps.gov/shen or call (540) 999-3500 for more details.

Devin’s Fishing Reports

I ran across this blog today, Devin’s Fishing Reports. This guy is 15 years old and he’s out fishing pretty often. His site has lots of good info about trout fishing around Thurmont, Maryland, including Big Hunting Creek and nearby streams. Check it out!

UPDATE: I got this from a comment on Devin’s blog – Frederick County Maryland At-A-Glance is a great resource if you’re planning on bushwhacking around Catoctin Mountain Park, Cunningham Falls State Park or Frederick Municipal Forest for some brook trout. Shows property lines and other information on an interactive map. I’ve updated the Resources link on this site.
