Two New Streams Added to Virginia’s Catchable Trout Stocking Program

Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries

The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries has added two new streams to its trout stocking program, the South Fork of the Powell River near Big Stone Gap, VA and the Middle Fork of the Holston River in Chilhowie, VA.

“A 2.3 mile section of the South Fork Powell River in the Town of Big Stone Gap and a 0.75 mile section of the Middle Fork Holston River in Chilhowie have been added to this very popular program. Included in the program are those waters that are posted as “Stocked Trout Waters” and are stocked with catchable-sized trout from October through May each year. Designated stocked trout waters are listed by the Director of the Department in the annual Trout Stocking Plan published in the “2011 Freshwater Fishing in Virginia” regulations pamphlet on pages 20 – 21.

This modification to the trout stocking plan will be effective with the formal posting of regulations on the new streams. “We are very excited about this great opportunity for anglers in Wise and Smyth Counties,” stated Bill Kittrell, Regional Aquatic Manager in the Department’s Marion Regional Office. “It has taken a considerable amount of work on the part of both the Town officials as well as Department staff to bring this about,” Kittrell explained. Officials from both the Town of Big Stone Gap and the Town of Chilhowie have presented the Department with formal resolutions supporting the concept. “In both cases, the Towns own large tracts of land adjacent to the streams, and access for the public is excellent,” Kittrell continued. These waters will only be considered designated stocked trout waters from October 1 through June 15, and a trout license will be required to fish in addition to the regular fishing license. A trout license is not required from June 16 through September 30. Trout angling hours on designated stocked trout waters are from 5:00 a.m. until one hour after sunset.”

Maryland Trout Stocking Schedule May 13 2011

NEW — In our quest for total world domination, the Brook Trout Fishing Guide is now posting Maryland’s trout stocking information each week. In addition to Virginia’s trout stocking info, this brings the total number of states we cover to… two. At this rate, we will cover every state that stocks fish (including Hawaii even though only on Kauai can you find trout) and become your one-stop resource for stocker fishing in about twenty five years. Thanks for being, uh, VERY patient.

Virginia Trout Stocking Schedule May 13 2011

Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries

A slightly smaller list of rivers stocked this past week in Virginia.

I often drive past Happy Creek in Front Royal on my way to fish in Shenandoah National Park. Right in the middle of town, looks like it would be a great place to take a kid fishing. I would guess this is most definitely put-and-take, and take all. Let’s see, it was stocked on May 10… might be too late.

The latest trout stocking info for this past week in Virginia.

The North River, the Stony Creeks, South River, South Branch of the Potomac, and the Holston — a lot of the classic Virginia trout streams were just stocked, and in many cases, multiple times in the past few weeks. Should be good fishing for a couple more months at least…

More fish stocked for your laid back angling pleasure and copied below.

A couple good brook trout streams were stocked well downstream of where the brookies are, the Robinson and Hawksbill. And several streams near all those chicken farms in Rockingham county were loaded up. Water levels should be sky high, given the massive rain we had last weekend and judging by what the Shenandoah River looks like near my home as recently as this afternoon. Be careful out there if you’re planning on wading and the water looks higher than what you’re used to.

A little late this week but I’ve been busy catching brook trout, and catching more brook trout. And you should be, too. But if you can’t, go catch some shad. And if you can’t do that (we’ve had four inches of rain out here today and the Potomac is likely going to be flooded for the next couple days), well, here ya go…

Brook Trout Could Be The Only Thing Separating Marcellus Gas Drillers from Fortunes

In the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette this past Sunday was an article about recently discovered trout populations in Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission is going to vote on whether to designate “98 streams statewide as Naturally Reproducing Wild Trout Waters, following the recent discovery there of trout populations, some by volunteer anglers working in a program that trains them to do stream surveys.” Interesting article with a lot of details and quotes from people in the environmental, state government and gas factions.

This could trigger further testing and land use restrictions that could impede Marcellus shale gas drilling operations in some areas. I’ll mention again that I think gas drilling done safely would be great, but the natural gas drilling industry has a spotty record so far.

Pennsylvania has some great online resources but I can’t keep them all straight. They have great fishing maps with all types of water and regulations shown. Then they have all these designations like Class A Wild Trout Streams, Streams that Support Natural Reproduction of Trout, Wilderness Trout Streams and more. The 98 streams mentioned in the article above are going to be voted on for inclusion in one of these categories. I could guess but I’m not completely sure which of these is it.

More fish, more more more… If you can’t get away to catch some brookies, here is the latest stocked stream report for Virginia. After hitting White Oak Canyon this week, I can tell you that dry fly fishing for brook trout is absolutely on! But if you have a convenient stocked trout stream next door, read on.

I can’t keep track of the Stony and Stoney Creeks in this state. And why wouldn’t you always put an “e” in that name? There is Little Stoney Creek and Stony Creek in Shenandoah County, which was just stocked (and is that really Big Stoney creek?). So was Stoney Creek in Wythe County and Big Stoney Creek in Giles County, down by Blacksburg:

Virginia Trout Stocking Schedule March 31 2011

Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries

Here is the latest trout stocking info from the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. Some of the better rivers in the state were just stocked, including the Jackson River, Bullpasture, Maury, Mill Creek and the Middle Fork and South Fork of the Holston River.

The Holston River is a place I’ve not yet fished. It is widely regarded as one of the best trout streams in the east, and a few say in the entire U.S. The Holston holds an estimated 5,000 to 6,000 trout per mile. A lot of the fish are wild brown trout. There are some good tips on fishing the Holston from the Blue Grass Chapter of TU. Check out the area right around here:
