And hey… since I’ve been asleep at the wheel since early last week, Maryland has also stocked some more trout, including steams and the lake in and around Cunningham Falls State Park. I love fishing that area. Big Hunting Creek should be fishing well with this cooler weather now, too. You can head to Thurmont, Maryland and hit half a dozen creeks, streams and a lake all within a fifteen minute drive. Good brook trout fishing in that part of Maryland, too.

Whoops… too busy last Friday to post this. The trout stocking in Virginia is in full swing.

Nice tip from Murray’s Fly Shop in Edinburg Virginia regarding Passage Creek, and newly stocked fish tactics in general — “Bring along a few streamers like a Pearl Marauder or Olive Strymph, these guys need to swim around in the wild a few more days before they figure out mayflies and caddis are good to eat.” A friend of mine also has a dirty trick to fool newly stocked trout. He ties up a “fly” that resembles one of the food pellets they’ve been raised on. All’s fair in love and…

Time for the fall trout stocking program in Virginia to begin again. And it already has.

Note the South River, near Waynesboro, Virginia. I spoke to one of the owners of the relatively new South River Fly Shop at the Rapidan Trout Unlimited chapter‘s fly fishing show this past February (see also the fly shop’s fishing conditions report). He had a lot to say about the South River’s comeback and I had meant to get down there this year to fish but have not. Yet. According to the fly shop’s fishing conditions report, the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries “stocked the 4.5 mile Special Regulations Area in Lyndhurst yesterday (September 26th). 10,000 brown trout were stocked, with sizes mostly from 6-8″, but some fish approaching 12″ were included.” This may be one of the items below from the VDGIF’s fish stocking report, but for a different date, interestingly.

Caught me off guard — Maryland just began its fall trout stocking program last week. It’s that time of year. The brook trout will soon be spawning but you can still get your trout fishing fix in the stocked streams throughout the east coast.

Bonus stocking of 500 brown trout on Owens Creek in the catch and release section on June 1st. That’s about it.

Bonus troubling news, in case you hadn’t read this, is that whirling disease was found in 8,000 rainbow trout stocked in western Maryland streams. Maryland has a real campaign to prevent the spread of invasive species and whirling disease, which includes a ban on felt soled wading boots and the maintenance of cleaning stations for waders and boots at many streams throughout the state. Heed their advice and be responsible.

Uh oh. It’s that time of year. Summer approaches, and the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries trout stocking program tapers off until the Fall. It’s light this week for sure.

Meanwhile, in the mountains the brook trout are hitting dry flies to the maximum extent. Go there now. Have a great weekend!

Maryland has stocked fish in sections of the North Branch of the Potomac and the Youghiogheny.

No one in the world not from that area can spell Youghiogheny, and if they could, they couldn’t pronounce it (“yock ah gain ee,” in case you needed that).

The water levels are dropping from muddy and raging to fishable on all the rivers around here. Even the Shenandoah is clearing up, finally. I stopped by Passage Creek last weekend and it was wild. I even saw two whitewater kayakers putting in at Rt. 55, downstream of where the fish are stocked, but they could have easily run the sections upstream. Looks like they just stocked Passage Creek this week, so might be worth checking out.

The fish stocking in Virginia will soon be slowing down for the summertime.
